The Scars of the War
According to UN latest inform they have verified 3,688 cases of rape and other sexual violence committed in war in 2023, a “dramatic increase” of 50 % over the previous year.
Most cases, 95 % involved women and girls. In 32 % of the incidents, children, overwhelmingly girls, were victims, while 21 cases were found to target lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex persons.
This long-term project aims to document the systematic use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, regardless of borders.
In the Tigray war, considered the bloodiest of the 21st century, 120,000 cases of sexual violence have been reported. In Ukraine, according to the United Nations, 433 cases have been reported so far: 302 men, 119 women, 10 girls, and 2 boys.
